Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and human behavior. Practitioners examine the relationship between behavior and the environment, and how those interact and influence each other. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and meaningful to the individual, and to decrease unsafe behaviors and barriers to learning. ABA therapy programs are individualized to meet the needs of the learner.

How it is applied:

  • Focuses on teaching and improving skills that will move the learner towards independence (functional communication, adaptive learning skills, play and leisure skills, social skills, activities of daily living, etc).

  • Identifies behaviors that interfere with an individuals’ ability to learn new things, access new environments, or present as a safety risk to the individual or others. Replacement behaviors and adaptive skills are taught systematically using research-based strategies.
